Empathy Through Experience: The Reality of Dementia

Empathy Through Experience: The Reality of Dementia

At Experience Professional Care Solutions, our team's participation in the Virtual Dementia Tour enhances empathy and expertise, ensuring exceptional support for clients with dementia.

Understanding Their World

At Experience Professional Care Solutions, exceptional dementia care begins with understanding your loved one’s experience.

Dementia affects much more than memory. Familiar rooms may feel confusing. Everyday sounds can become overwhelming. Simple choices may cause stress. Even comforting routines can become hard to follow.

Recently, Care Coordinator Lori and Intake Coordinator Opal attended the Virtual Dementia Tour at Highgate Senior Living. The immersive experience explored sensory, physical, and cognitive changes associated with dementia.

For families, these changes can be difficult to understand. Your loved one may become anxious in busy spaces. They may struggle to follow conversations. They may resist help with tasks they once handled easily.

These reactions are not usually intentional or “difficult” behavior. They may signal confusion, fear, overstimulation, or trouble processing what is happening.

Care Rooted in Patience

During the tour, Lori and Opal experienced how sensory changes can affect ordinary tasks. They also saw how distractions, limited mobility, and slower processing can create daily challenges.

What looks simple from the outside may feel exhausting or disorienting to someone with dementia. This perspective helps our team provide care with greater patience, empathy, and awareness.

We greater success as we:

  • slow down
  • communicate calmly
  • reduce unnecessary stimulation
  • offer reassurance
  • support familiar routines whenever possible

Behind frustration, withdrawal, or confusion is a person who may need comfort, clarity, and connection.

Support for the Whole Family

Dementia affects the whole family, not only the person receiving care. Loved ones often balance emotional concerns with practical decisions about safety, routines, and daily support.

Our role is to provide knowledgeable, compassionate care for your loved one. We also help families feel informed, supported, and less alone.

We are proud of Lori and Opal for investing in this meaningful learning experience. Their participation reflects our commitment to dignity-centered care for every client and family we serve.
